Your contribution to TenneT

As Technical Specialist Automation you are primarily focused on the onshore converter station at Maasvlakte. The converter station comprises HVDC equipment as well as auxiliary systems. You will be responsible for the engineering and commissioning of the automation systems. You act as the technical specialist for auxiliary automation systems and support the engineering, integration, testing and commissioning activities within the project. You provide technical expertise, review contractor deliverables, identify risks and deviations, and support the Sub Project Lead Automation in achieving the project objectives. Y

Your role is strongly hands on. You ensure that systems are fully integrated, correctly tested and operationally ready. You work closely with contractors, system integrators and TenneT operational stakeholders and report to the Sub Project Lead Automation

Scope and systems

Your technical scope includes:

•DCS and station automation systems for onshore HV substations.

•Control and monitoring of HV equipment and auxiliaries. 

•Building Management Systems including HVA/C, Power Supply, Fire Detection and access control interfaces. 

•SCADA and remote control integration with TenneT control centre.

•Industrial communication networks such as Profinet, IEC61850, IEC 104 etc. and redundancy concepts.

•Time synchronization and system availability concepts.

•Cybersecurity interfaces and access management.

Tasks and responsibilities

•Act as technical specialist for commissioning of the automation systems

•Verify testing and commissioning plans of contractors; ITPs, ITRs and CTPs

•Witness routine tests, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for various auxiliary systems and SCADA systems, ensuring quality control during the execution phase. 

•Analyse test results, identify deviations and open points and drive corrective actions with contractors and vendors

•Support the verification of integration between DCS, station automation, HV equipment and building related systems and identify technical issues and risks.

•Troubleshoot complex DCS, network and system integration issues during commissioning

•Verify redundancy, fail safe behaviour and system availability under fault conditions

•Support verification that automation systems meet operational requirements and provide technical input for handover to Operations.

•Support as built documentation, operational procedures and training input

•Contribute to commissioning planning, risk assessments and interface coordination

•Apply lessons learned to improve testing and commissioning efficiency across projects


Your profile and background

•Bachelor or Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation or comparable
•Minimum five years of hands-on experience with DCS and automation systems in HV substations, power plants or large industrial facilities
•Thorough knowledge of the principles of DCS systems and PLC controlled auxiliaries and their integration with a SCADA system
•Experience with commissioning of auxiliary systems and  knowledge of the lifecycle of commissioning from field instrumentation to HMI 
•Proven experience with FAT, SAT and site commissioning in brownfield and greenfield environments
•Solid understanding of HV substation systems and building related automation
•Experience with integration of systems such as HVA/C, fire detection and access control 
•Capable to coordinate on the technical level between internal stakeholders (e.g. System Operations, Asset Management, Operations and Maintenance) and external stakeholders.
•Familiarity with IEC 62443 standards an advantage however not required
•Comfortable working in commissioning and start up environments
•Willing to work at converter station Maasvlakte 3-4 days per week and 1 day per week in Arnhem
•English, both verbally and in writing and Dutch fluent or basic skills.

Offshore is responsible for the development, construction, and management of the offshore electricity grid. With the North Sea as the green engine of the energy transition, Offshore plays a clear and vital role within TenneT’s organisational structure.

The Offshore division manages the entire lifecycle of all TenneT offshore installations, from development and realisation to maintenance and handover to the Operate division. A crucial task is the construction of 2 GW offshore ‘sockets’, which collect and transport generated wind energy to the mainland.

We offer you:

  • A undetemined contract or year contract with the possibility of extension based on 40 hours per week.
  • A salary in scale 8: €4,276 to €8,443 per month (based on a 40-hour work week), excluding 8% holiday allowance,  6% year-end bonus and a flexbonus. Bandwith salary scale is based on education, experience, knowledge and internal equity.
  • A solid pension through ABP, with 70% of the premium paid by us.
  • 43 vacation days per year
  • Hybrid working, including an internet allowance of €32.50 and a home-office allowance.
  • Travel allowance: commuting allowance of €0,23 p/km nett and business of €0,44 p/km gross.
